Can You Bypass The Vacuum Canister On A 350 Chevy?

Its a 350 from a 1972 Chevelle. I recently rebuilt the motor completely and I have this canister sitting up front with vacuum hoses running all across the engine. I heard its no more than an emissions part and serves no real purpose.

Is it ok to bypass it and plug the ports where the vacuum lines go from there? Thanks

  1. All the canister does is to trap the gas vapors from the gas tank when the engine isn’t running, instead of letting them into the environment. After trapping them, there’s a hose to the carb to let the carb suck air thru the canister and burn the gas vapors. Plug away…..

  2. the canister is filled with charcoal and absorbs any gasoline that evaporates while the engine is not running. when you start the engine the gas vapors are drawn into the carb and burned. that is it’s purpose. if you plug the line running to the gas tank it might not be able to breathe.
