Clever. Effective. Expensive., October 11, 2012

Those folks at Dyson are a clever bunch, both in their product designs and in their marketing.

Here they have come up with a new brush attachment which is very smartly designed in order to avoid the tangling that can happen with a typical vacuum rotating brush. There are two counter-rotating heads, and an articulating base plate – heck, you can take a look at the descriptions above on the Amazon product page and see it better than I can describe it. (There is also a nice video on the CNET website that explains how it was designed, if you’re interested enough to learn more about it – go to CNET dot com and search for “Dyson solves vacuum’s greatest riddle: Hair”).

The whole thing is intended to work in such a way that hair or other stringy debris is drawn in to the suction of the vacuum without getting wrapped around the brush.

So far in our experience this attachment works very well. We have cats and for that reason are particularly interested in picking up as much hair as possible. I don’t think that cat hair is long enough to really challenge the “anti-tangling” aspect of this turbine brush but using it throughout the house it has worked well and without any noticeable tangling.

For example, I’ve used it vacuuming the bathroom floor where there were many more longer (human) hairs to pick up, and it worked perfectly and the long hairs did not result in any tangling. So I’m satisfied that it does work as claimed – nice!

What I really like about this attachment is that the design of the tool is such that the rotating heads are flexible and stay in better contact with surfaces being vacuumed (such as upholstery), and they are positioned closer to the front and side of the tool and able to better pick up hair and dirt that other attachments might not be able to reach (reducing the need for using a crevice tool). My expectation was that it would be more effective in cleaning upholstery, where the surface being vacuumed is not flat but rounded and flexible and hard to vacuum well with a typical stiff brush, and I do think that it is a considerably more effective vacuum attachment for those uses – vacuuming those cat hairs from fabric chairs and upholstery for example does seem to be much more effective with this tool.

One thing that surprised me when I first opened the box and saw this gadget for the first time – it is smaller than I expected. The illustrations here on Amazon and on Dyson’s own website make it seem larger than it is. In fact it is just very slightly wider than the standard flat vacuum attachment that comes attached to the full size upright Dyson vacuum. It is larger in height and depth of course, but essentially it is a more sophisticated small accessory tool – I think that Dyson calls it the “stair tool” – that comes standard with most vacuums, Dyson or otherwise.

I give this four (** see below) instead of five stars for two reasons. First is that the doggone thing is quite expensive, like pretty much anything from Dyson. They have great products but they are far from being the cheapest. Second is that this is a small attachment, for use with the hose and to manually vacuum upholstery or small areas on the floor, and it is obviously not practical to consider for vacuuming any large area. So that is a limitation. It would be nice to see them apply this technology to a full sized vacuum, and maybe that is their next step.

Appearance is sharp, as it should be for this price! Good design can also be great to look at!

** Update 6/27/13: Price has now decreased significantly (I paid $69.99 when it was first released, and it is now selling for $44.00, a reduction of 37%); I think that this is a much more reasonable price, and I’ve revised my rating to five stars. Additionally, in the 8 months since first receiving this product and writing the review, it has been used continuously, and I’m just as satisfied with it as I was in the very beginning. It works excellently and is very effective in vacuuming upholstery and other small surfaces.

Removes Golden Retriever hair from furniture and stairs effortlessly, completely and with ZERO tangles!

I have never used an attachment this effective, and which required zero post-vacuuming de-tangling.

I have to give it 5-stars, because despite the high price, it could not have performed better and the design is completely novel and highly-effective.
