Definitely an improvement.,
How you feel about Dustbusters in general will determine whether you find this a worthwhile purchase. Personally, I’ve never been that impressed with them: The suction has always been too weak, the capacity too small, the battery life too brief and never charged when you really need it.
This newest generation unit addresses most, but not all, of those issues and I think this is finally a useful tool, with some qualifications. The lithium battery provides a reliable, consistent and extended power source and there is adequate suction for most very small jobs in my tests. I have a Sears corded handheld and this Black & Decker is its equal in terms of suction. The canister is larger than the earlier model Dustbusters; emptying it and cleaning the filter–which is necessary after every use–is easily accomplished.
The issue that remains is how practical a handheld vacuum can be. If the job is small enough that a handheld is appropriate, it’s probably just as convenient to use a brush or rag and avoid the hassle of cleaning the canister and filter when done.
I have to add that Black & Decker has really been stepping up its game, lately, in terms of design. I have a few of their appliances and tools and have been very favorably impressed with the thoughtfulness of the features and the build quality. They are a consumer-level (as opposed to a professional level) toolmaker but I have, nonetheless, been very satisfied with each of my purchases. This item is no exception.
Overall, I think this hand vacuum is a well-designed unit and can be recommended for very small cleanup jobs.

Best cordless hand vac I have used…,
We’ve all used a “dustbuster” of some kind. This item represents the best of that hand-held genre and in some ways revolutionizes it. First, is the battery pack, which is the big revolution. The inclusion of the more costly Lithium Ion battery pack does two things: 1) eliminate the memory effect of the NiCd batteries used in every other (I believe) hand vac. This means you can recharge at will and not degrade the performance of the vacuum. Also – and I am not sure whether this is a battery issue or other design innovation – the vacuum maintains its power while charged, there is none of the quick degradation in suction/performance that you are used to with your typical hand-vac. Sure it does not last forever, but remember you can throw it back on the charger at any time, and refuel with performance degradation. It is a little but large for the type of vacuum that it is, but the plusses, to me, outweigh that minus. Enjoy the new trendsetting hand vac from B&D!

Great vacuum, a little hard to empty,
I was searching for a cordless hand vacuum, and really liked the sound of the Black and Decker. My main goal was to get something I could use to clean my car, and suck up the occasional spider (I know, I know). Because the dust isn’t bagged, this is a good bug remover because they go into the holding area, where they can’t escape until you let them out. It’s a *little* awkward emptying the dust because it gets stuck in there and I have to really shake to empty it, and the extension on the neck doesn’t lock into place so it pushes back in while you’re using it, but those are the the only reasons I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5.
Another plus is there’s a brush “attachment” that you swivel into place when you need it. I LOVE that I can’t lose the brush because it’s attached. I’m notorious for losing attachments.
Good power for a small unit.
