I bought this to replace a cheap bagless vacuum cleaner I’d bought several years ago during a Black Friday sale. Said vacuum didn’t pick up dirt very well, clogged easily (both the hose to the dirt compartment and the area around the ‘filter’ at the top of the compartment). It also didn’t have a hose. However, until I used this Dirt Devil on my carpet, I had no idea just how bad it was.

This vacuum picks up dirt better than the last bagged vacuum I owned. I learned this in an unfortunate way; skipping over the instructions on how to empty it, I ended up dumping the contents partly on my hand. Those contents were a very thin, almost rice-like powder, nothing like what my previous vacuums had picked up. Best of all, when I ran it over some loose cat litter, it didn’t spit anything back out at me like many vacuums. The hose is generous with several nifty attachments (I haven’t used them all but soon will) and the sucking power is strong enough to yank my hands towards the hose. But be careful when you first remove the vacuum from the styrofoam packing; I was repeatedly shocked when I vacuumed my floor, and badly. I recommend running a dryer sheet over the hose before using it the first time (unless you let it sit out for a while).

Speaking of the bagless compartment, it has easy removal to empty and the bottom-opening method is rather clever once you know it’s there. The HEPA and foam filter are also very easy to get to (pop open the catch once you’ve removed the collecting compartment, and voila!). It’s also about double the size of my old one. I vacuumed a mid-size living room and it was only 75% full (I have a Maine Coon cat, so most of it was fur). The old vacuum had to be emptied halfway through most of the time.

However, there are a few minor problems with this vacuum. The box suggests it can be used on bare floor, but it merely blew a small area of dirt all over the kitchen. But I’ll not quibble over that since vacuums are meant for carpets anyway. The biggest complaint I have is that the collecting container falls out. It has yet to fall out during use, thankfully, but you should’ve heard me scream when it first fell out as I was putting it away. This was before I realized that the container is utterly sealed. No mess to clean up if it tips over (though at the time, I believe it was already empty – call it a habit from the old vacuum that had repeated spills). It seems to come loose if you set it down too hard. It’s fairly secure when simply moving the vacuum back and forth, or even shaking the handle. It’s a vertical jarring that does it.

This vacuum is quite heavy, so I’m not sure it’d be good for taking up and down stairs. But the heaviness is all in the bottom of the vacuum, and helps push the vacuum onto the carpet. So it’s a trade-off. I can’t tell you if there’s any extra oomph to be had by the cyclonic airflow. I did notice the cat hair was more evenly distributed rather than clumping in one spot and restricting the flow. There’s also quite a bit of exhaust air, but I didn’t notice it having as bad a dusty/dirty quality to it as most vacuums, so perhaps the HEPA filter matters. Lastly, I’m 5’9 and most vacuums tend to have me stooping slightly, but this one seemed to be tall enough for me. Personally, I’m pretty happy with the Dirt Devil UD40275, flaws and all. Good value for the price.

    Purchased at Amazon
Dirt Devil UD40275 Power Path Dual Stage Cyclonic Bagless Upright
    URL: […]

Let me start off by saying that this is my second Dirt Devil. The first one I purchased at Walmart for around $45 or so some 5 years ago. Oh, it’s still running, I simply wore it out. It’s been relegated to garage duty – sort of a forced retirement. LOL

Like most of us, I did a fair amount of research into vacuums. My criterion was that I didn’t want to spend a lot of cash, less that $100, but at the same time, I didn’t want a piece of junk either. Not having a vacuum of another brand for a long time really doesn’t give me the right to compare it with anything else out there – except to my previous Dirt Devil.

The price was right, less than $100. It had the features I was looking for and a brand name that I did have some experience with. When I read these reviews, I always tell myself that we’re human, with different tastes, needs and the like. You will always find someone who finds something offensive about a product which you find perfectly acceptable. With that in mind, here goes…

The Dirt Devil came in a fairly small carton, which unfortunately, had a dent which pierced the cardboard. I’m always anxious when I get something like this but thank goodness the vacuum was safe and sound. I wish Amazon would put the original carton into one of theirs (sometimes they do this) so as to give the packaging a little more strength and also hide what’s inside. This vacuum was “sold by Amazon”. My overall experience with Amazon has been five-stars!

I proceeded to unpack the vacuum, all the parts were there. You should note that the two (2) screws needed for assembly are taped to the handle in a red, plastic envelope. The vacuum is red. I bring this up only because I missed them at first. You guessed it. Panic! Where are the screws?

The vacuum goes together quickly. Like I said, two (2) screws secure the two pieces of the handle to the part which houses the rotating brush, which has a light The handle is sort of a loop rather than a traditional handle that you have to grip. This makes the vacuum easy to move around and it won’t slip out of your hand. It’s a light vacuum but it has a good deal of power. My carpet is 6 years old and is a low-pile. It did pick up a lot of stuff that the old one was missing. I found that it glided nice and smooth across the carpet. There are four (4) carpet-height settings and one for bare floors.

The dirt container is really simple to detach from the machine and empty. Unlike other vacuums, the filter is not in the dirt container but underneath it. When the dirt container is removed, you can easily remove the filter to inspect/clean it as necessary. I’ve already cleaned the filter and the foam element that sits on top of it just by running it under water and it cleaned up nicely. You just need to wait for it to dry so do this at the end of your vacuuming chores and it will be ready for the next use.

The power cord for my use is long enough. My house is small, 1400 sqft (ranch, so no stairs) so I don’t need to plug/unplug too many times. I think the shorter cord is a good idea. My last Dirt Devil had a really long cord but it used to get really warm and the plug itself got hot as well. This cord is barely warm. There is no auto-cord windup but I didn’t see that an issue for me.

The usual attachments are there and have slots on the vacuum for storage. The small power-hand tool has a decent amount of power to clean upholstery, car mats, whatever.

Switches: The power-switch is foot-activated on the side of the vacuum.. Also located close-by is the pedal to tilt the handle backwards for vacuuming. If you don’t cut the power to the vacuum while it is in the upright position, the brush will continue to run. This might damage your carpet if left there too long.

Overall construction of the vacuum is satisfactory. Of course it’s plastic but it seems durable – only time will tell. Also, the vacuum’s exhaust blows out the sides and not on to the carpet which could blow dirt around.

I’m happy with the vacuum. I have a minor Asthma problem so I vacuum regularly.
So far so good. One more thing, I don’t have any pets. I’m sure that makes a big difference in the performance of a vacuum.
