My pool has never been cleaner, or cleaned faster, July 11, 2010

This review is from: Hayward RC9990 TigerShark Quick Clean 110-Volt/24-VDC Robotic Pool Cleaner (Lawn & Patio)

I replaced an aging water pressure-driven Polaris pool vac and booster pump with a TigerShark QC, and couldn’t be happier. We have a 35k gallon L-shaped vinyl lined pool, and I could never get the Polaris tuned correctly to clean every corner. If I adjusted the Polaris to have a slight left turn bias, it would miss corners on the right, and vice-versa. After running the Polaris all night, the pool bottom would only be about 80% clean.

With my TigerShark, the pool bottom is 100% clean in just a few hours, costing far less in electricity to run since I no longer need to run a booster pump all night. Last-minute plans for pool guests? No problem! The random patterns it uses provide far more efficient and complete coverage than the pressure driven Polaris. And unlike the Polaris, there is no hose “tail” whipping around, stirring up fine sediment to only settle back out later. The filter is more efficient too, so the water is cleaned better. Also, the walls get cleaned faaaaaar better than before, even up to the water line where pollen, sun lotion, and other scum normally accumulates. The TigerShark has no problems taking the hard 90-degree turns from floor to wall in the shallow end. Algae can form invisible protective slime layers on pool sides that chlorine can’t easily penetrate, so weekly brushing was previously important to prevent this. Now that I know the TigerShark is scrubbing the walls too, that’s one less pool chore for me.

My only complaint (and my only reason for not giving it 5 stars) is that the TigerShark occasionally gets stuck on the deep end bottom drain cover. I’ve seen other reviews mention this too. The drain cover is just tall enough and narrow enough that the TigerShark bottoms out and its tractor treads straddle the cover on either side. ** UPDATE ** If you call the manufacturer’s support line, they will send you a free attachment that clips to the bottom and helps prevent this. However, I had mixed results with this attachment – while it seemed to help reduce the frequency with which it gets stuck on the drain cover, the attachment also seems to restrict the water flow entering the under side of the Tiger Shark. This reduces the power of the water jet shooting from its top, which it uses to push down and grip the floor, so it began having trouble climbing slopes and walls. ** UPDATE-2 ** Polaris sells a universal drain cover (the Unicover) for about $60 that is designed to create a larger and smoother surface so that automated pool cleaners do not get stuck. See […] for pictures and to find a local retailer (or search Amazon).

I’ve seen others complain that cleaning the filters after use is a mess, but short of buying another robot to clean your robot, I’m not sure what those people want. 🙂 The filters look like miniature corrugated air filters. I lay the filter in the grass dirty side up, spray them at an angle with a jet of water from the garden hose, and the dirt flushes out with ease after just a few minutes of work.

Overall I am very pleased with this purchase, I am continually pleased with the speed and thoroughness with which it cleans my pool, and I would buy one again without hesitation. I’m a little anxious about how well the TigerShark will hold up, but after a year of use it shows no obvious signs of wear and tear, and has required no repairs. It seems that the more electronic and automated things are, the more there is to break and need repair. But my local pool company says that they get far fewer TigerSharks in for repair than other types of pool vacuums.
