Amazing – the best gets better,
We bought our first Miele vacuum 14 years ago. It has been the best vacuum either my wife or I have ever used. I did replace some parts a few years back, making it good as new. Part of the beauty of buying a quality item from a manufacturer not bent on perpetual profit means you can buy quality parts rather than throwing the machine away and buying new every two years.
As much as we loved our Miele, it did has some imperfections. Not flaws, just things that could be improved. Miele must have read our minds (or paid attention to customer feedback) because they have addressed every one of those imperfections – and more – with this unit.
Swivel wheels greatly improve maneuverability; the larger chassis allows the onboard tools to nest more easily and extends the bag changing interval, yet is noticeably lighter; the new “auto” mode actually works, reducing suction if you accidentally grab onto something you shouldn’t; the ergo handle is a stroke of genius; the temporary power off when docking the handle is another genius move; the light in the handle, a third (and it really works – really); and speaking of the handle docking, they improved that, too, making it a more robust system with a more positive lock.
For those of you not familiar with Miele vacuums, you’ve never heard a more quiet vacuum. The motor is, essentially, silent. The sound you do hear is from the air rushing into the pick up attachment. The system is not silent, but you can have a casual conversation while running it.
I mentioned a bag. Yes, Miele vacuums have bags. Because it is a better system. I have used several models of bagless “cyclone” vacuums, but they are all flawed. Swirling particles of dirt around in a plastic cylinder gives them a significant static charge. When you the. Open the unit to empty it, the dirt literally explodes all over the room. With the bags in the Miele system, this isn’t a problem. They seal nicely as you remove them. And don’t worry about the “lack of suction” that the cyclone guys claim happen with bagged systems. These Miele bags are made of an amazing fabric like material. They work beautifully.
The Alize unit is perfect for our house with 90% hardwood/tile and a very small amount of rugs/carpet. If you have a mostly carpeted house I would definitely recommend a Miele unit with a powered wand/head. Just make sure it is a Miele!

|Bare / Wood Floors,
Just got the S8590 yesterday after doing a bit of research over a few months before making a decision. Granted this model is a little spendy, I felt the price was worth it for what we were getting. I didn’t want something made in China and had seen a number of bad reviews about reliability and build quality with a number of other brands such as Electrolux.
I recently installed wood floors after tearing out all of the carpet in my house. My Bissel which was great on carpet and supposedly good for bare floors, wasn’t doing so great with picking stuff up off of the wood floors. I also did not want to empty and clean out the canister anymore. It seemed slick for a while to be able to see what you were sucking up, but opening the canister to empty it just releases a lot of the allergens right back into the environment. Plus emptying it outside when it’s freezing out isn’t very fun either if I was trying to avoid letting the dust back out into my house.
Anyway, we got the Miele SBB 300-3 Parquet Twister Smooth Floor Tool and love it. I make a slight turning motion with my wrist holding the handle, and the Parquet Twister turns immediately how I want it to turn. So vacuuming around sofas, chairs, tables, computer desks, etc is a breeze. It also vacuums right up to the edge of whatever you’re trying to clean around. So I don’t have to go back over it with a crevice tool to clean around the walls or other hard edges you’d normally have to go back over with an upright.
We also considered the Miele SBB 400-3 Parquet Twister XL Smooth Floor Brush and will probably get it in the near future. Not just because it’s wider, but also because it’s a little more narrow front to back. So when using the twisting action to turn it to slide into a tight spot, it would fit into some tighter spaces more easily. Also the width would allow for a little more cleaning action underneath some of the furniture I have.
The vacuum seems relatively quiet and I definitely enjoy the variable power settings and foot controls. The cord management is great as well. Plenty of suction on lower quieter settings, but even on full power, it’s still quieter than my Bissel upright I had. Actually most of the noise comes from the cleaning tool itself, not the motor on the vacuum. I also discovered you can attach the cleaning wand to the vacuum itself in two different positions for easy storage and transportation to other parts of the house. Had no idea it had that, but so glad it does. The vacuum is also quite light which makes it very enjoyable to move around to different parts of the house.
