Fantastic Vac,
Currently, there is only one other review on this vac, and it is one star. I’m not quite sure why that is. I think this is a fantastic vacuum cleaner. Our previous vacuum died and we needed it to replace it. This last one was the latest in a procession of vacuums that had died after only a couple of years’ use.
Apologies to Amazon (from whom I buy nearly everything), but at this price for a vacuum, I wanted local input in a store from an expert. Indeed, the local Miele rep was an expert and put this machine and the favorably reviewed Callisto (?) through their paces for my wife and myself. My wife is only interested in an upright vacuum, although she was tempted by the Callisto. Neither one of us felt like the Tango was particularly heavy, and there is a convenient carrying handle mounted on the machine in a place that makes it particularly easy to carry around. Unlike many vacs, the suction for the floor piece does not go through the hose. When the hose is placed in its home, its suction is turned off and diverted to the floor piece. The machine seems incredibly well made (as it should be for the price). It also articulates where the upright part fits into the floor piece, which allows you to change the angle of the path of the floor sweeper very easily. It picks up all the way out to the edges, and gets under cabinet overhangs quite well. To get under beds, one just wraps the cord around a cord lock under the handle and drops the handle down flat to the floor while holding on to the cord. This allows vacuuming under spaces like beds or tables without bending over.
The difference between this model and the Calypso, $200 cheaper is the controls. The rest seems to be the same. Controls on the cheaper model are mechanical while they are touch key electronic on the more expensive one. Also, on the more expensive unit, there is an ‘Automatic’ setting which is supposed to determine the type of floor (carpet, tile, scatter rug) and adjust the vacuum power automatically.
I’ll try to post a follow up in a few months…

It’s now August 2010. Vacuum cleaner is still performing well. Only one issue so far is that the red finish is not terribly durable. Lots of scrapes and scuffs, but I don’t keep the unit on display with a stand. It lives in the closet. So, I’m still quite happy with the purchase.

Good vacuum… at last,
I needed to replace my Dyson vacuum cleaner, and after a lot of research here and all over the net, I bought the Dyson DC28. It ate my oriental rug, even at the lowest setting. The powerbrush just chewed it up. I took it right back to BB and just couldn’t bring myself to get another Dyson (we have had three in the last ten years). We have two long hair cats and two long hair dogs (by accident.. all are rescues). and we needed something today that was dependable, durable, and efficient.
The Miele Tango fits the bill perfectly. It has different settings and can be gentle on my orientals and tough on pet hair all at the same time with powerful suction that adjusts for the perfect setting for whatever surface you are on. It has gotten up all the hair, and all the dust and small particles. I kept peeking into the bag, and I was really impressed with the amount of dirt the Dyson had been leaving behind due to a loose fitting dirt container. This vacuum is so quiet the pets just ignore it, and even though it is 20lbs it feels very light when vacuuming, and the handle makes it easy to get up and down the stairs. I will use this vacuum way more than the Dyson due to being so quiet, easy to push, and easy to use all the attachments. I love that I can go from wood floors to area rugs to carpet and back without having to lift up the beast to get it to go to different heights. I just tap the Tango with a toe, and the front lifts up enough to get over the edge. Also I can put it flat to vacuum under beds and furniture where no Dyson has been able to go.
The ergonomics of the Tango are great. Switches are where they are supposed to be, handles in good places, and the Tango feels very balanced, and is easier to maneuver than The Ball. The accessory hose just lifts out, then you pop on an attachment and vacuum that hard to reach place over there, holster it and continue vacuuming the floor. Brilliant ergonomics and thoughtful design mean ease of use and more likely to get the thing out and clean. I don’t care about buying bags, I’m happy to be through with emptying the dusty Dyson cup. The dealer says the bag will compact the dirt and hair and should hold 30 Dyson cups of dirt. That’s OK by me, and the Hepa filter system means no smelly vacuum exhaust.
The 7 year warranty means I will not be buying a new vacuum again for quite awhile, saving money in the long run, and if the Tango breaks, there is someone to fix it, like the old days. It was expensive yes, but when my husband looked it over, he commented that here was a well made machine… at last.

“The Last Vacuum You Will Every Buy”,
Miele S7580 Tango Upright (Titian Red Metallic)
In June I purchased the Miele S7580. I went to an authorized dealer and spent about an hour with the sales person and test drove some vacuums. At first I was all set to buy a Dyson Animal. The dealer said in his opinion the Dysons are always breaking, the store had a room full of Dysons waiting for repair. The Miele S7580 is top of the line and according to the sales person this is the last vacuum I will need to purchase. I am counting on that since I don’t want to spend anymore money on a vacuum. We have a one floor home with Oriental carpets and hard wood floors. The Miele upright works great on the large carpets, but I use the hose with the “all floor attachment” — another $60 on the hardwood and small carpets. This upright can be positioned almost completely horizontal to vacuum under beds and other furniture. I suppose I should have considered the canister model for my situation but it took too much muscle to use the canister model on the large carpets. The suction on the S7580 is strong and can be adjusted if needed for drapes and other light fabrics. There is an automatic setting that works great on the large carpet. When I balked at the price the dealer threw in a replacement bag and a free tune up in one year. Since shoes and dogs are allowed in our house I vacuum most days. The Miele S7580 really picks up all the dirt and dog hair that accumulates. Some days I pick up enough dog hair! I will update this review in a few months.
