Just got one…first day review!, January 25, 2011

I grew up in an Electrolux home and had an Electrolux as my first “adult” vacuum (unfortunately, I surrendered it in my divorce). I purchased a well reviewed (by a leading consumer magazine) Kenmore when I went out on my own and disliked many things about it — mostly, I just felt it wasn’t a very high quality. I purchased a Dyson to replace it, “wowed” by its claims and found it to be a reasonably good vac in terms of suction but IMPOSSIBLE to manage all the attachments and heft the thing around…and, it just feels like cheap plactic. I also didn’t like the bagless style, because despite all of the HEPA claims, it created a cloud of dust every time I emptied it. So, I relegated it to my moldy basement and decided to purchase a vacuum that had *everything* I wanted and would last 20 years, like my mom’s trusty Electrolux. (The real original Electrolux company was sold years ago and has since gone bankrupt; the Electroluxes you can buy now bought the name of the company only and are NOT the same product.)

I went into a vacuum shop becuase I got so many recommendations from friends that I knew I wanted something higher-end but really wanted a face-to-face purchase and wanted to touch, lift, try, etc. the machine I would end up buying (sorry, Amazon, I buy many things from you, but not this time).

I had never heard of Sebo and was leaning toward a Miele when I walked in. The man whose store I went to is a reputable dealer with a long history in town, but a salesman nonetheless, so I tried to “see through” any claims and gimmicks to make a good decision.

He started by telling me he uses a Sebo (and since he can use any kind he wants to…yadda) and showed me the features. I fell in love immediately with its weight and design: heavy enough to be sturdy but not too heavy to carry around, comfortable handle, varied suction, retractable cord, lots of filtration (asthma and allergy concerns in my home). He then showed me the comparable Miele which had all the same features and was a few dollars cheaper, but the power head (for carpets) felt much heavier and the handle was not as comfortable.

So after an hour of trying, talking, and questioning, I got the Sebo Airbelt D4 (but the model I got has the larger power head than the one pictured above). I went home and tried it by vacuuming floors (I have polished wood, textured wood with cracks between the boards, ceramic tile, oriental rugs, hooked rugs, wall-to-wall with average pile; drapes, lampshades, the stairs…and so far I love its features and ease of use.

The true test will come with the turbo head for upholstry (on order for me) because I have a yellow lab who loves to sit on the furniture. If this works well and I continue to be happy with the whole thing, I will be a happy housewife (well, really a full-time teacher and mother of three…go figure).

    I will report back!

We can’t believe we did this but it’s the best buy in vacuums we have ever done. Our family has always had an upright because we have always had a lot of carpet in our houses. Uprights are for carpet and cannisters are for hardwood. That is the rule. We also have had a cannister type vacuum but used it very little. Mostly a kithen and garage vac for us. Well it was finally time for a new vac. Over our life we have gone through lots of brands. The kids are grown and gone but we still have our dogs. After talking with and testing lots of different brands at our local store we purchased the Sebo. Same vacuum the owner and his wife use. It’s pricy but this will be our last. Our house today has lots of hardwood but still a few rooms with carpet. After using our Sebo for the last few months we can say without a doubt it is the best vacuum we have ever owned. We got a red one. Like the other reviewer we had to go to the store for this type of purchase. Sorry Amazon. Works on carpet and furiture as well as hardwood. Picks up all the dog hair and anything else that hits the ground. The Sebo also has a nice long cord and hose, so not a lot of unplugging to move from room to room. I keep saying we because my husband vacuums also. He likes the Sebo and my life is easier ’cause he vacuums the house more than I do. He finds it theraputic.
One other thing…..it’s quietest and lightest vacuum we have every owned.
