Most will say upright i say canister simply because if you get a penny stuck in an upright you will need to replace the whole thing. I think canisters are easier as well because you can get under things and vacuum couches and ceiling fans.I also say to get a swifter too.
I like the upright for area rugs and carpet , and the canister for bare floors, I have both .
An upright cleaner may be heavy to hold. For a small apartment it may be handy, because it is easier to store. In a house, however, you will have to clean large areas. So, I think you should use a good canister vacuum cleaner.
For laminate also consider a broom.
buy the unit that fits your price range & needs. visit any store that sells vacuums & handle them.
