1946 Hoover Upright vacuum 305

Wow! I certainly did not expect to find this today, but I’ve been wanting this style of machine for some time now. I was in the area of my favorite thrift store, and something was telling me to pull in, so I did. I spottted it a mile away! I paid .05 for it in very bad cosmetic condition. Someone sloppily sprayed the base a nasty grey a while back, and oversprayed onto the hood and bumper strip. I stripped all the overspray off the hood and bumper, painted the base a glossy grey and painted the “HOOVER” on the hood with grey model paint, washed the original and in great condition bag (which I believe was originally grey and now a light tan because it is grey under the bag holder), replaced the headlight (still has the lens), and replaced the cord (I thought the old one was unsafe!) with one off a 2008 Hoover Empower that had an internal motor overload problem. It could use a few more minor details, but not bad for just 1 day! BTW, luv the huge bag!

  1. @fgbags u know what sad? i dont even own a convertible! i cant find them anywhere! i really want one ive had only one when i was 6. it had a broken fan

  2. @animebsd Yeah, me too. The closest I have to one is the Decade 800 which is one of my favorites. We had a Convertible we got brand new in ’86, and the first vac I remembered my Grandma having was a Custom Convertible. I will have an actual Convertible again someday, but I haven’t found the right one yet. There are so many to choose from, but I’m looking for the “Ultimate” Convertible! lol

  3. wow very nice Hoover! wish i had places around here that sold decent vacuums. nice bag didnt expect it to get that big from the first look of it!

  4. @cjh1618 Thank 🙂 I’ve scored a few jewels at this particular thrift store. It’s a pretty big one thats only been open for a couple years.I felt the same about the bag. When it’s off it don’t look that big but once on, it’s like whoa!!

  5. Very nice Hoover. Goes perfectly with my Art Deco theme & my love of vintage vacuums. I’m waiting for one to be shipped that I ordered online. I figure that with a little cosmetic TLC, i can have it looking like new. What size belt does it take? Is it possible to get a replacement lens & a light bulb to fit? what kind of paint did you use to repaint it? Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

  6. Nice 305….but just so you know the 305 was made before the war NOT after..it was made from 1939 to 1941. After the war the added the side slot for the hose adapter removed the Hoover script from the hood and called it the Model 27 which was superceded in 1948 by the Model 28.

  7. @vintageappliguy Yeah, I’ve been meaning to take the date off the heading. I later found out the date stamps are from when it was serviced. Thanks for letting me know the date ranges though 🙂
