  1. No easy answer.

Uprights are perfect for carpets, usually have more suction power, but won’t go under furniture. Canisters have attachments that will get dirt out of tight places like sliding door tracks. Canisters are also better and easier on bare floors.

We have both, but if I had the choice of only one – I would go with the canister.

  2. Dyson or Electrolux. they are pricey but they will outlast all of the others that you’ll replace 3 times

  3. Canister vacuums are the worst. You have to drag the darn canister around behind you, and you’ll get lazy and just jerk on the hose, which will eventually break the hose. Don’t even bother. Upright is the way to go (Does you fiance’s mother have a canister? Typically men are convinced that whatever their mothers used is the very best, and never bother trying anything else).

I have a Dyson ball and I love it. It really is very maneuverable, has a lot of suction and doesn’t need bags. It also has a HEPA filter that you clean yourself rather than replacing. It’s the best vacuum I’ve ever owned.

  4. Stick vacuum is the best choice. They are small and lightweight and powerful and the easiest and the cheapest.
