Why do I get static shocks from one of my cats when I pat him?

Doozer B need help to clarify doubt about: : Why do I get static shocks from one of my cats when I pat him?
Lately, whenever my partner or I pat one of our cats, we end up getting shocked, and so does he! It doesn’t happen with our other cat, and has only just started happening with this one. Why would this occur?

the reason is that when your cat is scratching himself, it is doing a negative charge. this is called static electricity.

  1. The only answer i can give is from experience… I have 2 cats and at this time of year in the midwest where I live the air is dry in the house and static electricity is VERY common with our furry friends. I have a gray semi long hair cat that I always get shocked from and my other cat has shorter black hair that I dont get shocked from. My partner said the same with his 2 cats one long haired and one shorter. Assuming surface area of fur in a long haired cat causes more static electricity than a short haired cat. Also the cat that doesnt clean its self would have more dust or dirt and may not be as clean and could be blocking some of the static discharge. My black cat doesnt clean himself as much as the long haired gray cat so maybe that also has something to do with it. Hope this helps you and your partner out and have a good new year!

  2. It’s static electricity. It occurs more when the surrounding air is dry. You may want to consider getting a humidifier.
